The Boost

Good evening family and friends,

I received a bit of a surprise this morning when I went in for my radiation session.  One of the technicians casually informed me that the remaining sessions would be booster sessions.  This was news to me, or perhaps I'd forgotten, but apparently they have completed the treatment of the "margins" and are now focusing only on the prostate itself.  The only difference is that instead of two full rotations of the radiation head, I now only receive one.  So the remaining 14 sessions will be just a bit shorter and apparently more focused.

It is with incredible relief that I report that the hives are almost gone.  There are still large areas of somewhat itchy rash and an occasional mini hive will crop up, but nothing like last week.  Slowly but surely I am adding foods which are known to cause allergies back into my diet and so far, so good.  Wheat, peanut butter, tree nuts, and milk are all know allergens, but none of them seem to be the culprit.  More than anything, I am very relieved to discover that dark chocolate wasn't responsible.  I'm back to suspecting the chemical cocktail of supplements, prescription medicine, and herbals coupled with the compromised immune system as creating the perfect storm.  If I never have to go through that again, it will be too soon.

Rowan getting ready for the walk
Yesterday was an absolutely perfect Oregon spring day.  The official temperature was only in the mid to upper 50's, but without a breath of wind, it seemed much warmer.  Better yet, it was one of my better days in quite some time so I was able to get out and enjoy it.  Kathy and I took three short walks in the morning and then and went over to visit Erika and Rowan.  Rowan seems to have responded well to his medication and has not had a known episode of SVT for several days.

Eagle nest in the Jackson Bottom Wetland
Before dinner we got out for another walk, with Rowan in his Baby Bjorn carrier for the first time.  We walked to our new house, although we hadn't officially closed so we could only peek through the windows.  We had several stipulations written into the contract--to service the furnace and clean carpets--and were curious if any work was being done.

On the way back we walked on the trail above the wetland.  It is a very busy place this time of year.  The air was full of the trills of red-wing blackbirds and other wetland birds.  The waterfowl are pairing up and the resident eagles are getting their house in order.

Typical of Oregon spring weather, today was just the opposite - cold, rainy, and blustery.  Generally crappy weather.  This morning was kind of  a downer for me as well.   I really wish I could put a finger on what triggers how I feel from day to day, so that I could control it better.  By mid-afternoon the weather started to improve and I began to feel much better as well.  I think a power nap helped a lot.

The other major news of the day is that we signed the final papers with the title company after the radiation treatments this morning.  There are only a couple of minor formalities until we officially own a second home.  We were able to walk through it late this afternoon and found that the cleaners did a relatively reasonable job, considering there was a lot of cleaning that had to be done.   Gradually finishing that job to our standards will be chore number one, once we get the keys.   Then, over the next few weeks we can start to make it our own.  I just hope and pray for the energy to be an active part of the preparation.

We can think of so many things to be thankful for over the past week, both in our lives and in the lives of those we know and care about.  We also send heartfelt thoughts to those who are facing significant health challenges.
Be sure to let those that are dear to you know how much you care about them!

Wishing you spring-like days!

Shalom,
Barry and Kathy

  1. It sounds like that poor prostrate of yours is going to get turned to mush by the time this is over. That, or your appendix if they somehow switch you files with the guy before you. Thank goodness you've gotten on top of the hives ordeal, too. Enough is enough. Speaking of enough, I recently read there are something like nine different pronunciations of the letters ough in the English language. That's something you can ponder during your next radiation treatment.

Guess you'll be new home owners by the time you read this. That should make your lives even more livelier. Hope it's a wonderful new addition to the "family." We're just hoping it doesn't take you away from P'burg too much of the time.

    1. Wondering how many pronunciations there are for "ouch"!!!
We're very happy with our decision to be near Erika. It will take time to make it feel reallzy cozy. P'burg will always be home!

  2. Spring in Oregon! The daffodils are in bloom already!! Glad to hear that you have "skipped a grade" in your treatment and things are progressing well.

Soon you will be busy trying to remember which drawer holds the spoons and if your favorite pictures should be in the livingroom or the bedroom. Happy dilemmas in comparison to health issues. . .

It continues to snow here and the reports tonight are for more snow and then rain. Seems like it might be a good time to be in Portland. The Rose Garden will be in bloom before you know it!

    1. We're enjoying the flowering trees, blooming before our very eyes--they get more beautiful by the minute!
Spring is going to take a rest for a week or so, and so are we.

      Thanks for your thoughts!

  3. As I was looking at the picture you have of the ice cave for March's calendar pic, I thought how appropriate to have it show the light at the end of a tunnel. That light should be getting a bit bigger every day as this ordeal comes to a close.
    Love you,

    1. Nice! Yes, the light is getting a bit bigger--11 more days, and it can't come too soon!
Also, remembering the very scary part of that day last March--brrrr.

  4. Hi Barry and Kathy,
started writing this morning and was interrupted, lost the computer and the reply. Anyway, sounds like things are progressing toward the end of the treatment and the season of Spring. The weather is unsettled here also, but instead of rain we have warm weather followed by cold weather and most of the time winds. We really need the moisture and so far we, on the plains, have not received it. We have another month or so of optimal conditions for moisture, we need a "4 corners low" (the juncture of CO, UT, NM and AR) that draws the moisture up from the gulf and brings it into our area from the East. Anyway I hope we get it soon.
Sounds like the treatments and the new house are going to keep you two busy. Isn't that what retirement is for? Sure seems that way, so far, for me. I have a bunch of stuff to get done and the list is expanding.
Glad Rowan is not experience the SVTs lately, and I really hope they cease well before his 1st birthday, oh and he is one cute kid with his hat, sweats with the whales. He looks like he's ready to look upon the "Sound" by the Bracken resident. Anyway, with the focus treatment and less radiation you may get fewer side effects from the treatment. Hope all is going well. Jim

    1. JW, you may recall that Kathy is from Colorado, Boulder area. Springtime in the Rockies--we predict that some snow will fall and bring some moisture :) Hope the drying winds stop!
It got to 62* here today, a welcome warm spell. Another fair day and we'll be back to rain. Too bad we can't ship the moisture your way, the Rockies get in the way.
We hope to get the townhouse clean enough to "camp" in it for a short while before we head back North, then concentrate on it more when we have time and energy next fall.
We hope to get Rowan and his family up to P'burg in mid-May (just before all of your clan returns)--his momma misses the Sound, and can't wait to expose him to it!
Thanks for the note! We're praying for an easier time of it over the next two weeks.
      Shalom,
      K&B

  5. Good to hear the hives are on the retreat and that the end is in sight. I will have to set up some sort of blog because it is too much to keep everyone updated. I am going to look into Caring Bridge, I think.

We are on our way to Houston tomorrow...time for me to take the comfort of a world class organization and stop trying to do it all myself.

Pat has been an angel. We put them through too much...love to you both.

  6. Hi Kathy and Barry,

What a darling cutie that Rowan is! Glad to hear things are going well. Barry, with only 14 more sessions to go, its a piece of cake now! And with spring weather about to bust into bloom you're gonna be feeling finer and finer no matter what they throw your way! Keep taking those power naps, keep snuggling that new little guy and stay strong.

    Thinking of you,
    Deidra
